Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. We’ve typed similar words hundreds of time in typing classes, but have we ever listened to the meaning? It was a call to action and now we are calling all conservatives to arise and take heed.
When will we learn that conservatism appeals to all races and ethnic groups as the recent victory for traditional marriage in Florida, Arizona and California showed? Conservatism really is a “big tent” unless you try to compromise with the liberals as John McCain did.
As Margaret Thatcher said, “If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing.” That was the election in a nutshell.
The McCain campaign failed to energize the conservative base by avoiding issues that matter the most to conservatives: limited government, the right to bear arms, the sanctity of life, a stronger military, winning the war on terror, energy independence, border security, capitalism, constructionist judges, national sovereignty, stricter adherence to our constitution and reliance upon God for our future – not the government.
Also, John McCain wouldn’t stand up against the democrats in Washington D.C. on the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac scandals, against expanding government and the $700 billion unconstitutional bailout that goes against the traditional values of conservatives.
Conservatives need a spokesperson who will lay the blame for Fannie and Freddie failures right at the feet of the democrats that caused it. In the 2004 congressional hearings where the Bush administration attempted to increase the oversight of both GSE’s, Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT), Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) all praised the institutions and urged them to do more to help high-risk borrowers get better loans.
In 2002, when the Enron and WorldCom scandals broke, congressional hearings were held and executives were jailed. That will never happen with Fannie and Freddie now because the ones presiding over the hearings are the same ones that had their hands in the cookie jar.
McCain also made the major mistake of getting into a bidding war with a liberal democrat by promising to buy delinquent mortgages and install more government programs. McCain made no mention of cutting or eliminating programs that were obsolete while Obama promised over $1 trillion in new spending. You can never outspend a liberal, especially when they are spending our money.
We’ve tried to get along with Ted Kennedy and appease all the liberals in Congress – it’s time to stop and spread our message of conservatism and let the chips fall where they may. The term “conservative” outpolled “liberal” by 66-34% in a recent New York Times poll, but we are not getting the conservative message to the voters.
Even though most of our country is conservative, for years, we have sat back and watched the liberals take over our justice system with the ACLU as their ally. They have put activist, radical judges on the bench who create laws rather than interpreting them.
While Governor Palin, a true conservative, was on the campaign trail talking about conservative values, John McCain was promising a $300 billion bailout for delinquent mortgages. McCain lined up with democrats on campaign finance, global warming and immigration and consequently had no clear message, especially to the conservatives.
John McCain is a military hero and I respect him for his service and his love for this country, but being a maverick should have meant challenging the liberals on bigger government.
If McCain had stood up with other conservatives and voted “no” on the $700 billion bailout, he may be president-elect today. The media helped him get nominated and then turned their back on him when their candidate, Obama, won their party’s nomination.
Even in his concession speech, McCain spoke about finding “the necessary compromises to bridge our differences.” He should have taken a cue from Ronald Reagan’s 1976 concession speech, “Sure there is a disappointment in what happened, but the cause goes on. Don’t get cynical because there are millions of us that want America to be a shining city on a hill.”
“We have got to quit talking to each other and about each other and go out and communicate to the world that we may be fewer in numbers than we have ever been, but we carry the message they are waiting for.” That’s what Reagan would do.
